From Our Director
This issue is packed with information. There is much happening on the political scene that can have a negative impact on our food supply. I urge you to take action when asked to. Our collective voices can make a difference.
Spring is finally arriving, and now is the time to consider joining a CSA. You will find a listing of CSA opportunities below. We have also listed “Where to get the Beef”, for your shopping ease.
A special thank you to all who attended “Friday Night Live” slaying the Cholesterol Monster, with Dr. Steve Fischer. He did a wonderful job of presenting what can be a complex issue. The science was there, the facts were present and a little humor kept it from getting too technical. A special singing of “Oh Statin Joy” was presented by his daughter, to the delight of all!
Our next event will be Growing Connections Conference on May 30th in Southgate. This all day conference promises to be awesome! Sally Fallon will present two lectures, Eat Fat, Lose Fat and Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner WAP style. Dr. David Brownstein will talk about hormones and Marjie Andrejciw will talk on healthy gut. Lunch will be available from Pure Foods 2 U. The farmers and vendors will be there to complete the day. You won’t want to miss it!
Finally check out our new Facebook page, where you’ll find a video collage of last years Growing Connections. In Facebook search HTN, click on pages tab under the search results for HTN the Metro Detroit Chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation

Book Review - Real Food for Mother and Baby
Review by Lisa Imerman, J.D.
I received an advanced reading copy of this book through HTN and boy was it timely. As I am currently very close to delivering my fourth child, I devoured this book. I loved it!! Nina Planck is a wonderful author who also wrote the book Real Food and who writes for the NY Times. Ms. Planck is a big supporter of eating nutrient-dense food and this book stresses her philosophy. This book is a guide as well as the story of Ms. Planck’s own pregnancy and motherhood experience. She is like a best friend who explains each bit of advice but tenders it with practical information, the science behind the advice, and she admits no one is perfect and you need to make your own decision about what is right for you and your family.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Spring is in the air, even if snow has been on the ground!! It is the time of year to plan ahead and join a CSA. CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture” and it is a fabulous way to get fresh produce all season and support your local farmers. The CSA model is gaining more and more popularity every year which has resulted in may CSAs being sold out of shares early on in the year, but it also means many farms are starting CSAs on their own property. With a CSA you sign up for a share and you pay upfront in the spring, then you get a box of fresh produce every week during the growing season. Each CSA is different, some require work hours on the farm as well as a fee, some do delivery, some do farm pick-up only.

Cod Liver Oil Announcement
Green Pastures has announced that it is discontinuing their complete line of Blue Ice High-Vitamin Cod Liver Oil. The processor they used in Norway has switched to adding synthetic vitamins rather than adding back in the natural vitamins found in the oil. Therefore, Green Pastures feels they can no longer provide the quality product that everyone has come to depend on. For more information on this, see the announcement at their website. http://www.greenpasture.org/node/130
Call HTN or go to our website to order your CLO before it is no longer available. www.htnetwork.org/shop
The fermented CLO will still be available and Green Pastures will be adding flavors and more options to their fermented CLO line.
